The continuous widening of the book funds placed the problem of the insufficiency of the premises soon. After several hypotheses, the solution was identified destining the ex church of the Collegio dei Gesuiti (the College Of The Jesuits) at new library seat.
The reorganization project was entrusted to the Domenico Crosa and Mario Labò architects, who adopted a solution considered at the time in the vanguard (innovative): the church nave was horizontally divided to lodge the book store, established by a metal ant seismic and self-supporting structure of four floors and, in the superior part, the reading room.
The new premises were inaugurated in the December 1935. Since 1975 the Library has been a peripheral institute of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities.

Declared in 1801 Pubblica Biblioteca Nazionale (National Public Library), in the December 1802 the government sanctioned the library title to receive the compulsory deposit from the printers of Liguria.
In 1815, with the passage of the Ligurian territories below the Savoy, as "library of the royal university of Genoa" it took again its narrow tie with the university, moreover never lost again.
In 1866, with the last liquidation (abolition) wave of religious congregations, the library further got rich of the conventual libraries, fact that justifies the presence between its current collections of a full-bodied book religious and theological matter core (core of religious and theological matters).
The College of Jesus's Society
The headquarters of biblioiteca, closed in July 2014, represents the origins and evolution of our library collections. The Library occupied part of the second and third floor of the ex College Of Jesus's Society, that today lodges the rectorship and a few faculties of the University of Studies in Genoa, as well as the readapted church of SS. Gerolamo and Francesco Saverio of the same Society.
The College Palace, designed by Bartholomew Bianco and financed by the Balbi family, extends towards the hill on its back and the steep configuration of the ground has conditioned the development since the beginning. The monumental building proposes, with its two different courtyards placed at two different levels on the slope, a space solution which is different from the usual schemes of the Jesuitic architecture. The palace, concluded only in the first half of '700, appears there like a scenography: from the portal, supported with a centring on ring columns, to the foyer, and finally to the binate column courtyard with open gallery, introduced from a grand staircase at one ramp and dominated by two covered and uncovered "loggia", up to reach at last the superior internal courtyard.
The College Church was built under the direction of Francesco Bianco and of Father Horace Grasso, has one nave and four side chapels and was finished in 1667. The interior decoration was begun started in 1666. The only today visible to the public zone is the chorus, frescoed by genoese Dominic Piola (1627-1703) and by his pupils and completed by ‘trompe l'oeil’ type architectural paintings by Bolognese Paolo Brozzi. The public, which enters into the reading hall can today enjoy a very neat and close view of some of the chorus frescos, like only the restorers normally have the privilege to see, from the scaffolding in normal work situations. While the "ensemble effect" of the pictorial cycle of the church is very difficult to be captured in modern times, the commemorative purpose and the magnificience of the buyer, Francesco Maria heir of Pantaleo Balbi, and of the religious program of Jesus's Society, is still perceptibe today.
Dal Collegio alla Biblioteca
La Biblioteca Universitaria con i suoi volumi riccamente illustrati è perno intorno al quale prendono avvio e ritornano le tracce “all’antica” sparse sul territorio genovese. Se ne illustrano dunque per sommi capi la storia delle origini gesuitiche, dell’evoluzione delle raccolte, del primo bibliotecario scelto dalla Repubblica di Genova per esplorarne i tesori e della sua personale passione per le opere di antiquaria.
Le origini della Biblioteca Universitaria di Genova vanno ricercate nella Libreria del Collegio dei Gesuiti.Le notizie più antiche sull’esistenza di una libreria annessa alle scuole fondate dai Gesuiti genovesi risalgono al 1604. Trovata nel 1623 una sede definitiva nell’area del convento di San Gerolamo del Roso (venduta ai padri ignaziani dalla famiglia Balbi), l’imponente costruzione del Collegio risulta terminata in ogni sua parte nel 1664.Le scuole si erano già stabilite nelle parti agibili del palazzo tra il 1636 e il 1642.L’ordine gesuita era giunto a Genova nel 1548 per volere dello stesso Ignazio di Loyola.
Nel corso di due secoli di vita, la Compagnia di Gesù, soppressa il 21 luglio 1773 con bolla di Papa Clemente XIV, aveva conquistato una precisa fisionomia all’interno della cultura genovese, un ruolo preminente soprattutto nell’attività didattica e una visibilità sociale tangibilmente rappresentata da ben quattro chiese, tra cui quella dei SS. Gerolamo e Francesco Saverio annessa al Collegio di Palazzo Balbi e quella del Gesù (“chiesa della repubblica” per la presenza in forma ufficiale del doge, del senato e delle magistrature cittadine).
Con lo scioglimento, nel 1773, della Compagnia di Gesù, il Collegio fu ribattezzato Università Pubblica e passò sotto il controllo diretto della Repubblica di Genova. Alla biblioteca gesuitica vennero, nel 1777, aggiunti altri patrimoni bibliografici liguri appartenenti all’ordine soppresso (Casa Professa di S. Ambrogio, Fidecommissaria Centurioni, Collegi di Savona e San Remo) e la Deputazione, appositamente costituita dal Senato della Repubblica di Genova per gestire i volumi ereditati dall'Ordine gesuita, nominò primo bibliotecario della Biblioteca l’ex gesuita Gaspare Luigi Oderico al quale affidò l’anno successivo il compito di redigere il catalogo del patrimonio bibliografico incamerato.
Gaspare Luigi Oderico (Genova 1725-1803) fu erudito antichista, numismatico, studioso di antichità etrusche e romane. Mitico “primo bibliotecario” della Biblioteca Universitaria di Genova, continua ancora oggi ad essere identificato come l’ecclesiastico che, vestito dei neri panni dell’abito gesuita, da una tela dipinta intorno al 1760, ci mostra, quasi a spronarci nel nostro lavoro, la minuta e precisa scrittura delle sue carte.
