He was born in Messina, in a family of French origin, October 23, 1816 and died in Florence, almost centenary, November 2, 1914. He studied in Milan and Paris and in 1841 he was appointed professor at the University of Messina.
In 1847, for political reasons, he fled to Florence. He was appointed in 1851, professor of analytical geometry and infinitesimal calculus at the Maritime School (Scuola di Marina) of Genova. Always in Genoa, in 1859, he went to the university. In 1881 he obtained retirement for health reasons and he returned to Firenze, where he remained until his death.
He was rector of the University of Genova and, among other things, member of the Accademia dei Lincei, a member of the Società dei XL and collaborator of the “Annali” of Tortolini.
His little abundant production focuses on scientific analysis and especially the derivation of fractional order.
